CHAPTER 25

The four men walk with Pongo and Alon and slowly step down the chasm to enter the cave below. The remaining members of the tribe are in front of them slowly meandering their way

back to the Becknick.

‘We will head back to the Becknick and gather some water for our long trek to Cheeiot Crag,’ Pongo adds.

‘It is a warm day and good for a trek to Cheeiot Crag,’ Alon says with a smile.

Sam, Joe, Jack and Josh are excited to be part of yet another adventure and there is a sense of intrigue surrounding their afternoon.

At the Becknick the men freshen up and join with Pongo and Alon in their Tunne for a refreshing drink. Pongo has packed some supplies including water and fresh fruit.

‘We will share some Djubu fruit when we arrive at Cheeiot Crag,’ Pongo adds before breaking into laughter. Alon looks at Pongo and similarly breaks into laughter which throws the adventurers who smile and watch on, not really understanding the joke the two men have shared.

The men finish another drink of Everlyth water and are keen to head off on their trek to the lookout where they are told they will have breath taking views.

The path away from the Becknick is well worn, and the topography of the land changes. They move away from the clay soil underfoot to forest and it becomes denser the further they trek.

‘Do you come up here often?’ Josh asks.

Pongo turns around and whilst still walking replies, ’Women and hunters come here often to get Chandwarj. Other tribesmen come here regularly too to taste the Djubu fruits, but NO to be honest Alon and I do not visit that regularly.’

‘I am intrigued to find out about the Chandwarj and Djubu fruits,’ Josh says.

The two men again laugh between themselves as they turn to look at each other. ‘You will find out. All in good time,’ Alon adds still laughing as he replies.

Deep into the forest the group admire the surrounds and Jack reminisces adding, ‘Gee this is familiar country. It reminds me of the first ten days of our adventure pretty much the same, day after day.’

Josh laughs, ‘Yes you are right. It is a little déjà vu.’

‘We are nearly there, but we should stop and take a break and share a drink,’ Alon adds.

The group stop and find a large rock or fallen tree to sit and rest.

‘I was very excited to be present at the celebration for Emon and Cherro,’ Joe says bowing his head in the direction of Alon and then Pongo.

‘It is an important part of our life. The Oviert is very powerful and we do not often have celebrations for our deceased,’ Alon adds.

‘There has been a few more of late, with warring tribes either side attacking us,’ Pongo adds emotionally.

‘Do you think that the Gattic hold fears that there is more trouble ahead?’ Sam asks.

‘Well yes! If you listened to what the Gattic said. The advice of our elders and the direction they suggest then I suppose we do need to be careful,’ Alon insists.
